Voter Suppression Law Ruled Unconstitutional

MADISON — Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate in response to a circuit judge's ruling today that Scott Walker's voter suppression law was unconstitutional.

"We already knew that Scott Walker's efforts to suppress voting in Wisconsin offended our state's norms and traditions. Now, for the second time, a judge has ruled that it offends Wisconsin's Constitution.

We know it is critically urgent for Republicans to see that Wisconsinites, primarily elderly, student and minority voters, have unnecessary roadblocks in their way when participating in democracy, and we fully anticipate today's ruling to be challenged.

Madison -- The controversial bill to weaken environmental protections and streamline permitting processes in Wisconsin was voted down and returned to committee today after a compromise could not be reached. Bill Williams, Gogebic Taconite CEO, was in attendance to watch the measure get voted down. Today, Williams stated it would be difficult to keep pursuing the mine if these streamlining provisions are not enacted.
