U.S Senate (1)
Washington -- On Wednesday, U.S Senator Ron Johnson (R) attended his first hearing as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and left the Badger State red-faced after his political theatrics with regard to the questioning of outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the Benghazi attack.
While questioning Clinton, Johnson said:
"We were misled that there were supposedly protests and that something sprang out of that, an assault sprang out of that, and that was easily ascertained that that was not the fact, and the American people could have known that within days and they didn't know that,"
Clinton responded authoritatively:
"With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they'd they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator.
"Now honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is that people were trying in real time to get to the best information. The I.C. (Intelligence Community) has a process I understand going with the other committees to explain how these talking points came out. But you know, to be clear it is from my perspective less important today looking backwards as to why these militants decided they did it than to find them and bring them to justice, and then maybe we'll figure out what was going on the meantime."
New revelations surfaced in the days following the terse verbal volley. (Virtually assured) Incoming U.S Secretary of State John Kerry chastised Johnson for speaking out of turn when Johnson was found to not have reviewed tapes or information regarding the attack. Reported by Daily Kos contributor Hunter
Kerry: I think it was very clear… were you at the briefing with the tapes?
Kerry: Well, there was a briefing with tapes, which we all saw—those of us who went to it—uh, which made it crystal clear. We sat for several hours with our intel folks, who described to us precisely what we were seeing. We saw all of the events unfold. We had a very complete and detailed description.
Johnson’s admitted lack of knowledge and information to the attack made clear he was more interested in scoring political points rather than obtaining the information being sought during the hearings – So clear, that MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews made it a point to publically eviscerate the Wisconsin Senator when he said:
"That was kind of a piss-ant performance by that guy from Wisconsin. I don't know how these guys get over the wall into American politics. I think they won in a very low turnout elections in Wisconsin. I think everybody should run now in national elections, forced to go into elections where there's a lot of voters, so you don't get this weird, warped sense of people coming who supposedly represent the American electorate. That guy doesn't represent anybody.
